Five venues in the U.S. put in a bid to be the host of the next CCI4* competition – the second in the U.S. and only the seventh in the world. In January the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Board of Directors has named a short list of host venues for a new CCI4* eventing competition beginning in the autumn of 2019. Two venues have been named to the short list for further consideration:Fair Hill and Great Meadow. Listen in to representatives from Fair Hill and Great Meadow as they share information about their respective venues as we anxiously await the decision.

We catch up with Richard Jeffery who is the USEF Eventing Show Jumping Course Advisor about the new program for reviewing the show jumping courses at every FEI competition in the U.S. Course Designers will be asked to submit their courses as posted to Jeffery with all technical details (distance, time allowed, etc.) within five days of the competition. Each course will be posted on the USEF Website with Jeffery's analysis along with a course evaluation completed by the Course Designer prior to the event. Also on the Podcast is course designer, Chris Barnard with his feedback on the program.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week was a whirlwind with USEA’s Instructors’ Certification Program (ICP), Future Event Horse Program (FEH) and Young Event Horse Program (YEH) teaming up to offer an ultimate educational symposium in Ocala, Fla. Legendary horseman Chris Ryan, who is known for sourcing some of the most successful event horses in the world like 2008 silver medalist Mckinlaigh, was the lead clinician for the FEH program, and Le Lion d’Angers champion Chris Burton was the lead clinician for the ICP and YEH groups. Both Ryan and Burton join us on the podcast today to share their philosophies and training principles that they shared this week.

The West Coast season is officially underway with another Galway Downs Winter Horse Trials in the books. We caught up with a few of the winners from last weekend on this podcast. Megan Traynham took home the blue ribbon in the Open Intermediate division adding no jump penalties but 3.6 time in the cross-country and 2 time penalties in the show jumping. She did this with her own Lord Lombardi a 9-year-old Holsteiner gelding by Lordship. Sarah Braun picked up the win the Open Preliminary (33.4) with Korin Potenza's Crowning Event, a 15-year-old Thoroughbred (Event of the Year x Homecoming Crown). Jory McKaig also ended her weekend in first place aboard her own Demanding Day (High Demand x Soul of Kindness), a 10-year-old Thoroughbred. The pair won wire-to-wire, knocking only one pole in the show jumping to end on a score of 31.9. All scores can be found here.

Heart of the Carolinas 3-Day Event & H.T. (HOTC) at Southern 8ths Farm is a destination event for riders up and down the east coast each spring. In addition to their ordinary horse trials divisions, they also boast a plethora of educational eventing opportunities. HOTC has been a long supporter of the USEA Classic Series and they are the only venue in the country to host a Beginner Novice Three-Day in addition to the Novice and Training level long format divisions. The new Modified level, a stepping stone between Training and Preliminary, will also make its Area III debut at the Chesterfield, S.C. venue. The HOTC crew pulls out all the stops to make sure their May event offers something for everyone.
